A top-ranked wrestler from Centerfield has earned statewide recognition from wrestling officials this year and, most recently, participation in a coveted tournament.

The 2021 Ross Brunson Utah All-Star Duals took place last Tuesday afternoon in Orem, where Gunnison Valley High School wrestler Tezlin Winn was invited to take part in the special event due to his incredible season thus far.

The tournament had roughly 120 of Utah’s best high school wrestlers including Winn, who was picked due to his season record of 30 and 2. He is ranked No. 1 in 2A in the 132 pound weight class.

Winn said that he felt honored to be chosen to be a part of the All-Star Duals. “There are a lot of really great wrestlers out there, and so I was pretty excited to be picked two years in a row,” said Winn.

Wrestling has been a part of Winn’s life ever since he can remember, starting with an early training from his father, Riley Winn, a former wrestler himself. He has since made a lot of wrestling memories, but he said his favorite of all time was of winning Super State.

“Super State is a true state tournament, where all the wrestlers from 1A to 6A compete for the title,” he stated. “So taking first was a huge accomplishment for me.”

There are a lot of things that Winn loves about wrestling, but he said he has enjoyed meeting people and making friends above all.

“I have had some really great coaches and teammates while growing up that I am still in contact with,” Winn said. “We are still friends even though now they either coach for or wrestle on different teams.

Winn wrestled Ryan Bulloch of Payson High School at the All-Star Duels. Bulloch took Winn down one minute into the match and was able to get him turned to his back for a two-count and another 2 points to finish the 1st period. Bulloch chose the down position to start the 2nd period and was able to get the escape and take Winn down and get the pin over Winn.

Although the results of the All-Star match aren’t quite what Winn had in mind, it will neither take away from the amazing season he is having nor his No. 1 ranking.
