SALT LAKE CITY—The Manti High cross country team made the trip to Sugar House Park last Wednesday Oct. 19 to participate in the state championship races.

The Manti girls team finished the day in fourth place while the boys tied with South Sevier for seventh.

By virtue of a tiebreaker, the South Sevier Rams claimed the seventh spot and the Templars dropped to eighth.

Madison Norris who finished in sixth place individually with a time of 20:05.0 led the girls team. Allison Bishop was 11th at 20:19.9, while Ellie Anderson finished 29th with a time of 21:58.0.

Jessie Godfrey was 33rd at 22:17.9. Jenifer Bailey came in 69th place with a time of 24:28.0. Ellie Christensen was the sixth finisher for the Templars, taking the 74th spot with a time of 24:28.0.

The sixth place finish by Norris was the highest individual finish by a Manti girl runner. Bishop ran her personal best time, and according to coach Brandon Norris, Anderson ran “the best race of her life.”

Two of the top Templars girl runners were unable to participate due to injury and illness. The girls who took their places stepped up and ran well for their team, Norris said.

For the boys, Jordan Cheney was sixth with a time of 17:02.0; Nathaniel Cox was 36th at 18:13.1; and Colton Fulmer was 44th at 18:31.5.

Max Mickelson was 52nd at 18:52.0; Caleb Jensen finished 56th at 18:56.7; Kyler Nelson was 72nd at 19:31.0; and Tim Krzymowski was 80th at 20:09.2.

“Jordan (Cheney) ran out of his mind,” Norris said. “This was the best race he’s ever had.”

Cheney’s time was his personal record. Mickelson ran on a twisted ankle and still turned in his personal record. Besides placing 72nd, Nelson was named to the Academic All-State team for cross country.
