GUNNISON—The Bulldogs are still searching for consistency in their play, but a solid showing against an outmatched opponent provided a ray of light through the clouds.
The Gunnison boys’ basketball team halted their four-game losing streak with a runaway victory over Merit Academy at home, 61-14, last Tuesday. They subsequently fell in a one-point loss to Altamont, 44-43, last Friday, moving their overall record to 3-5.
The Bulldogs outscored Merit by double digits in every single quarter, holding a 30-4 lead at the half. Going deep into their bench, Coach Tyson Moosman’s squad had 11 players score at least a point in the game.
Senior Myles Bartholomew led all scorers with 12 points, while senior Jack Hansen added 11 points. The Bulldogs combined to make six 3-pointers.
Against Altamont, the Bulldogs traded punches with the Longhorns wire to wire. Gunnison led at halftime, 22-16, but the Longhorns rallied their way back with 17 points in the third quarter, then just snuck past them in the final period for the win.
The stats were peculiar for the Bulldogs in the loss as they were efficient from the arc and nowhere else, combining to make seven 3-pointers. No one scored double-digits for Gunnison in the game as sophomore Jet Hill and junior Grogan Christensen led with nine points apiece.
Moosman did not respond to requests for comment.
Gunnison will play host to Manti next Wednesday and then will be off for two weeks.
