GUNNISON—The boys basketball team of Gunnison Valley High School qualified for the State 2A playoffs, despite stumbling down the stretch of the regular season.
In its last two regular season games, both played at home, the Bulldogs lost to Beaver, 66-60, and then to North Sevier, 46-39.
On Wednesday, Feb. 7, the Bulldogs staged an exciting comeback in the fourth quarter to force overtime, only to fall at the end.
Down eight points at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs came roaring back to make up the difference. They were not able to sustain that effort, however, and were outscored 11-5 in the overtime period.
Parx Bartholomew led the Bulldogs with 23 points, including three three-pointers.
In a defensive struggle on Friday, Feb. 9, between Gunnison and North Sevier, neither team touched a 50-point ceiling as the Bulldogs fell to the Wolves 46-39.
Wyatt Young led the Bulldogs with 15 points.
Gunnison will be the No. 5 seed from Region 18 in the Utah State 2A playoffs.
Their first-round game will be at Desert Hills High School in St. George on Saturday. The Bulldogs will face Layton Christian Academy, the No. 1 seed from Region 16. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:40 p.m.
