OREM—The North Sanpete girls’ volleyball team took fifth place in the 3A state championship playoffs at Utah Valley University last Thursday.
The Lady Hawks cruised through the first round with a win against Logan, 3-0.
North Sanpete then faced a tough Union team later that day. Every one of the five sets was nail-bitingly close in the five-set match. North Sanpete dropped the first set to the Lady Cougars, 26-24, before a convincing 25-17 set point in the second. North Sanpete took the lead with a 26-24 set point to go up 2-1 before Union came back in the fourth set, 25-23. The shortened fifth stayed extremely close, but the victory slipped away from the Lady Hawks 15-13.
Although the loss ended North Sanpete’s hopes of a championship, the Lady Hawks rebounded from the loss to pull off a revenge win against Dixie, one of the only teams that beat North Sanpete early in the season, 3-1, before taking away an overwhelming victory over Juan Diego to claim fifth place in the tournament.
