GUNNISON—The Lady Bulldogs got their new year started off in exactly the right way.

The Gunnison Valley girls’ basketball team peeled off two wins in the first week of January, beating Providence Hall, 41-27, at home last Tuesday, then prevailing over Waterford, 27-20, on Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs’ overall record moved to 4-6 as they prepare to face the region slate.

Junior Rilee Dyreng led all scorers against Providence Hall as she netted 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Dyreng was active all over the court as she also had six assists and four steals. Senior Raven Pickett scored 10 points and led in rebounding with nine boards.

Gunnison was initially playing from behind against the 3A-level Patriots, but they evened it out at halftime to lead, 17-13, at the half. The Lady Bulldogs then ran away from Providence Hall in the third quarter, 14-4, and cruised to the finish.

Box scores and film were unavailable for the Lady Bulldogs’ win over Waterford, but it was senior Gracey Mickelson who led the team as she scored 9 points, leading the team in scoring for the first time in her career. Pickett had 8 points to go with 10 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs will prepare to face Duchesne this Tuesday for the first region game. They’ll then host Millard on Wednesday.
