Lady Hawks fall to Carbon Dinos, 54-8

PRICE—The North Sanpete girls’ basketball team fell victim to a 21-0 run that began shortly after the Carbon Dinos deployed a full-court press. The Lady Hawks lost the Tuesday, Dec. 8 battle in Price, 54-8.

For the Lady Hawks (0-3), Melissa Murillo scored three points; Tylee Henrie and Kortley Cook each had two; and Bree Allred scored one.

For the Lady Dinos (5-0), Makenna Blanc had 10 points and seven rebounds and Sydney Orth had 10 and six, leading 10 players who scored in the contest. Madi Orth had nine points and eight rebounds and Janzie Jensen had nine points, five assists and four rebounds. Alex Cartwright had five rebounds and nine Lady Dinos had at least one steal.

North Sanpete did force 19 turnovers, including five out of Jensen, four out of Sydney Orth and three out of Blanc. However, Carbon nabbed 30 steals.

North Sanpete Coach Taylor Christensen did not return requests for comment.

Henrie made a basket for the Lady Hawks’ first score about seven minutes into the game to make the score 9-2.

But then Carbon went on its run.

Blanc made two free throws for a 14-2 Lady Dino lead. Then Blanc made another two around 35 seconds later to give Carbon a 14-point advantage.

Lyndee Mower went coast-to-coast for a layup after making a steal to put North Sanpete in an 18-2 hole with less than five minutes in the second quarter.

Kennedy Williams made an uncontested layup for a 24-2 Lady Dino advantage with just more than a minute left in the second quarter. Seconds later, Jensen made a free throw. Then just seconds after that, Molly Banks scored off of a steal.

Blanc made a one-footed 12-foot floater seconds into the second half for a 29-2 Carbon advantage.

Before the run, Banks made one free throw with 7:21 left in the first quarter to draw first blood.

Blanc made a layup off an inbound to give the Lady Dinos a 5-0 lead with more than six minutes to go in the first stanza.

Banks made a free throw to give Carbon a 6-0 lead with 4:09 left in the first quarter.

Cartwright scored off a post-up to give the Lady Dinos a 9-0 advantage with 2:07 left in the first stanza.

To break the run, Murillo made a free throw with 6:58 left in the third quarter to make it 30-3 Carbon.

Allred made a free throw with 5:15 in the third quarter to make it 32-4 Lady Dinos.

Blanc made an easy layup off an inbounds pass for a 30-point Carbon lead with more than four minutes until the end of the third quarter.

Karli Hillam made a shot after many hands touched the ball in a major battle for possession with the third quarter nearly over. The Lady Dinos led 39-4 after three quarters.

An Amiah Timothy free throw gave Carbon a 40-4 lead with 6:39 left in the game, giving the Lady Dinos a point count 10 times that of the Lady Hawks for a third time, as it was also 30-3 and 20-2.

Cook’s layup with 6:13 to go in the contest made it 40-6 Carbon.

Jensen made a high-arching layup with around 3:40 to go in the game for a 40-point Lady Dino advantage.

Murillo hit back-to-back free throws with 3:17 left in the contest for a 46-8 score.

Jensen went on a scoring spree near the end of the game, scoring six points in less than a minute-and-a-half. With more than two minutes left in the game, Jensen scored off a put-back. She then followed with a layup on the very next possession. Jensen then scored again with 43 seconds left to open up a 52-8 lead for Carbon.

North Sanpete next faces Maeser Prep (2-2) at home at 7 p.m. Thursday before participating in the SVC Girls Basketball Preview at 10:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
