MT. PLEASANT—The Lady Hawks have finally started to fly.
After beginning their season 0-7 with a Tuesday loss to Juab in region play, North Sanpete softball peeled off two straight wins in dominant fashion, shutting out Milford, 16-0, last Wednesday and taking down region foe Delta, 13-3, last Friday. The Lady Hawks moved to 2-7 on the season and now hold a 1-1 region record.
The good times started to roll late in the game against Juab. Despite the loss, it looked like it was going to be a convincing win for the Wasps until North Sanpete fired up the plate in the top of the seventh inning. The Lady Hawks nearly pulled off the last-minute upset as they scored six runs, including a three-run homer by junior Lucy Oldroyd.
That momentum carried well in Wednesday’s game when North Sanpete peeled off 12 hits to only two strikeouts against the Tigers. Junior Tyler Miramontes led with four RBI, and sophomore Paeton Johnson, pitching her first full game, ended it in three innings with a marvelous eight strikeouts in that span.
The hitting clinic continued as the Lady Hawks took on a winless yet tenacious Delta team. Senior Heather Howarth and sophomore Indigo North both hit home runs, and North Sanpete combined for 11 hits and no recorded strikeouts.
Coach Landon Bailey was unavailable to comment.
The Lady Hawks’ season continues in the Payson Varsity Tournament this Saturday as they take on 5A Lehi, Duchesne, 5A Salem Hills and Gunnison Valley. They’ll then be on the road next Tuesday for a rivalry matchup with Manti.
