MANTI – The Lady Templars proved last week that when it comes to reliable scorers, quantity can outdo quality.
The Manti girls’ basketball team completed a sweep of North Sanpete for the third straight year as they held on in the second half to win, 51-39, on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
Manti had multiple players score in double-figures on the evening as senior Charlee Mandel led the team with 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Seniors Sharlie Alder and Tiffany Hermansen backed her up with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
For North Sanpete, junior Tylee Henrie was a one-woman wrecking ball, scoring 27 of the team’s 39 points, a solid way to keep Manti on notice for next year.
The Lady Templars raced out to a 14-3 lead after the opening period. Manti pushed its lead to 20 at halftime, 31-11.
It was North Sanpete, or Henrie, rather, that had the upper hand in the second half as the Lady Hawks outscored Manti, 28-20, over the second half, not enough to close the gap.
With the win, Manti moves to 10-8 on the season and 4-3 in Region 14 play.
Manti followed up the victory with a close win over Juab, 46-45. Junior Heidi Jorgensen returned to form and led Manti with 13 points, while Alder and Mandel each put up 10 points.
North Sanpete moved to 4-13 on the season and 1-5 in region play after losing a subsequent matchup with Union on Thursday, Feb. 3, 43-32. Stats were not available for this game.
Manti will have a brief break from Region 14 as it will play Bryce Valley on Tuesday. The Templars will then be on the road to finish out their regular season against Union.
North Sanpete will close out the regular season with games against Juab and Delta.
