Wrestling started off in full swing this weekend and local teams pulled off some great new moves.

Gunnison and Manti competed at the Juab Winter Classics while North Sanpete traveled north to the Stansbury AK47 duals.

The Bulldogs had a great weekend placing third in the gold bracket. Gunnison had wins over Snow Canyon 45-25 and North Sevier 42-36. Two of the Bulldog wrestlers went undefeated at the tournament. They were Tezlin Winn wrestling at 132 pounds and Talon Belnap in the 195 pound weight class. Garrett Jensen at 126 pounds and Jake Sorenson at 160 pounds both had a great weekend, only losing one match.

Wrestlers from Manti placed fourth in the black bracket with a win over Snow Canyon 39 to 36. Manti’s 160 pound wrestler Dane Seely went undefeated at the Winter Classics.

North Sanpete put up a great showing in Stansbury placing first in the bronze bracket. Kasey Curtis at 126 pounds and heavy weight wrestler Rory Smith both went undefeated at the weekend duals. The team won their duels between Freemont and Taylorsville.

“We saw a lot of great things,” said the Hawks new coach Spencer Dyches. “We worked on several things this past week and we saw the kids use them. Great things are coming from the Hawks this season. I am proud of each one of the wrestlers.”

All three Sanpete teams will be wrestling in Manti this weekend at the Holiday Classics.
