SALT LAKE CITY—The boys basketball team of Wasatch Academy improved to 15-2 as they defeated 2A power Layton Christian Academy Eagles 81-38 last Saturday at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City.
Layton Christian came undermanned against the powerful Wasatch squad but stuck to their game plan undeterred.
The Eagles ran their offense patiently, trying to wear down the Tiger defenders, yet they could not keep up and slipped further and further behind as the game went on.
Wasatch Academy’s coach, Curtis Condie, praised his team for being able to stay focused for so long on defense: “The Eagles would score after about 60 seconds on their possessions. Our guys defended their offense really well for 55 seconds, but it’s hard to ask them to guard for that hard and that long.”
The Eagles stayed within striking distance for three quarters, falling behind just six points per quarter.
But the Tigers really blew out the Eagles in the fourth quarter, outscoring them by 26 points, 30-4.
Nevertheless, Condie had high praise for the Tigers’ opponents: “Layton Christian is the defending 2A state champs. They will not lose again this year; they will win the state title again.”
Marvin “Tre” Williams III (two threes) and Tyrese Samuel (five rebounds) led all scorers with 20 points on the afternoon, while Matt Bradley had 16 points and five rebounds.
Wasatch Academy hosted Impact Academy on Tuesday (score unavailable) and travels to Cerritos College, Calif., to take on Taft High School (Woodland Hills, Calif.) on Saturday at the Rolling Hills Prep Classic.
