Carolynn Ann Carlson Newton

Carolynn Ann Carlson Newton, 91, passed away in Richfield, Utah, on Sept. 7, 2026, following a valiantly fought battle with extended illness.

Carolynn was born June 27, 1935, to George Lincoln (Lynn) and Carol Calista Kimball Carlson. Following her parents’ divorce, she was raised by her mother in Topanga, California.

Carolynn graduated from Canoga Park High School, where her talents as an artist and illustrator were already evident. One of her original drawings was chosen to grace the cover of her high school yearbook. She also loved sports, especially volleyball, her favorite. She proudly played volleyball for Canoga Park High School. She also loved music, singing and playing piano.

Her marriage to Richard Roland Potter, Feb. 27, 1954, produced three children: Richard Dee, Steven Edward, and Cynthia Lynn. They were later divorced.

Some years later, Carolynn became a Carmelite nun for thirteen years at a monastery in Georgetown, California. After leaving the convent, she met and married Larry Alan Newton, June 23, 2001.

They both joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, moved to Colorado, then to Manti, Utah. They were sealed in the Manti Temple, May 2, 2009. They were both active in the church and community. She became a widow when Larry passed away in 2015.

Carolynn was deeply interested in her pioneer heritage and loved serving as Captain of the Manti Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She also treasured being part of her extended Carlson (Jorgensen) family, and they all enjoyed the cherished relationships that came with that.

She was a good cook, and delighted in having a garden. Her lovely yard, beautiful flowers, and beloved chickens—each with their own special pet names—brought her great joy. But perhaps most of all, Carolynn adored her kitties, who were an essential and much-loved part of her life, right after her children and grandchildren.

Carolynn is survived by her children, Richard Barrett and Cynthia (Michael Martin), her brother, Charles Bennett (Yolanda); 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; her special friend Louise; special neighbors Ed, Claudia, and Lori; plus many loving cousins and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Larry; her son, Steven; her sister, Ruth; and her stepson, Shon. She will be lovingly remembered for her devotion to family, her appreciation of her pioneer heritage, and the joy she found in the people, animals, and beautiful surroundings that filled her life.

There will be a visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Magleby Mortuary, Manti, on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, followed by a graveside service at 1 p.m. Burial at Manti City Cemetery.
