Gunnison Valley High School was packed with students from all corners of the county as four local high schools came together for the 10th annual Spirit Bowl, known as the Clash of Colors. GVHS claimed the coveted Golden Shovel trophy this year.
Students from North Sanpete, Manti, Gunnison Valley, and North Sevier filled the gym to compete in a series of friendly competitions, all vying for the Golden Shovel. The event, organized by student council members from each school, has become a beloved tradition since its debut on Jan. 23, 2016.
While the rivalry on the court and field between these schools runs deep, Spirit Bowl flips the energy into something more collaborative. Student councils from all four schools work together in the planning stages, giving student leaders a chance to build relationships across district lines before the competition even starts.
“The Clash of Colors gives the four local high schools the opportunity to meet together in friendly competition,” said Ann-Marie Davis, Gunnison Valley’s Student Council Advisor. “The Student Councils from each school meet together to plan and organize the event each year, which allows them to get to know their counterparts. While the Golden Shovel is the hoped-for prize, the opportunity to compete, followed by a dance, is the real attraction.”
The event wrapped up with a dance, giving students from all four schools a chance to hang out after a day of going head to head.
As Spirit Bowl hits its tenth year, the tradition shows no signs of slowing down. Davis said the schools hope to continue the event for years to come.
