Local libraries aim to ‘Color Our World’ through summer reading program

Libraries across Sanpete County are participating in a summer reading initiative that blends books with hands-on activities.
“This year’s theme is, “Color Our World,” says Manti head librarian Cindy Lopez. “Each library’s programs are unique and provide rich colorful experiences for children, teens and adults.”
At Manti Public Library, the program began with staff from Lovey’s Grooming and Lovey’s Wild Pets bringing exotic animals to the library and explaining to summer reading participants how pets enrich everyday life. Children adopted toy dogs and built miniature dog houses.
During the second week, which was devoted to fabric arts, youngsters explored embroidery, tatting and yarn crafts.
“There is a twinkle in a child’s eyes when they learn and create projects,” Lopez said.
Manti’s lineup continues on Tuesday mornings at 10:30. Participants will tour the Manti community garden on June 17, sketch with artist Carl Purcell on June 24, learn martial-arts basics on July 8, practice photography on July 15 and close the season with dancing, awards and prizes on July 29.
A separate challenge track encourages teens and adults to broaden their reading.
The Ephraim Public Library has layered color-themed events onto its regular schedule.
“Throughout the summer, the Ephraim Public Library will be hosting color-themed events in addition to our regular programming,” said Ephraim Library Director Michael Thompson. “Turn in reading logs for chances to win prizes throughout the summer. We will end our summer reading program with an ‘End of the Rainbow’ party on Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. at Canyon View Park in Ephraim, where we will provide food, colorful activities and raffle off prizes.”
The Mt. Pleasant Library summer reading program meets on Mondays at 10 a.m. in the Recreation Center. Origami is set for June 23, followed by a family-night chalk throw on the soccer field June 30 at 5:30 p.m., mosaics on July 7 and a martial-arts demonstration by Jeff Price on July 14. The final party is July 21.
Teen activities begin July 11 at 5 p.m. in the library, with a pool-side finale Aug. 8 at 10 p.m.
The Gunnison Civic Library holds its summer reading gatherings on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. on the south side of the city park near the Lion’s Pavilion. Sessions started on June 3 and continue through July 22, weaving reading incentives into weekly crafts and games.
Organizers urge families to contact their branches for details: Mt. Pleasant at 462-3340, Gunnison at 528-3104, Ephraim at (801) 798-8359 and Manti at 835-2201.
