What is the Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area?

Discover the Enduring Legacy of the Mormon Pioneers in the Heart of Utah
Nestled in the rugged landscape of central and southern Utah, the Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area (MPNHA) invites you to embark on a captivating journey through the history and heritage of the Mormon pioneers. Established by an Act of Congress in 2006, the MPNHA is the only national heritage area dedicated to preserving the legacy of a specific group, offering a unique window into the challenges, triumphs, and enduring spirit of the pioneers who settled this region.
Spanning 400 miles along the historic U.S. Highway 89 corridor, the MPNHA encompasses six counties: Sanpete, Sevier, Piute, Wayne, Garfield, and Kane. Each area has its own distinctive pioneer story to tell, from the Scandinavian influences of the “Little Denmark” district to the frontier hardships of the “Under the Rim” region.
As you explore the MPNHA, you’ll discover how the pioneers interacted with the landscape, building intricate irrigation systems and establishing thriving agricultural communities in the harsh desert environment. You’ll learn about the social and religious institutions they created, including the magnificent Manti Temple, a testament to their faith and craftsmanship. And you’ll have the opportunity to participate in cultural events and festivals that keep the pioneer heritage alive.
Since its establishment, the MPNHA has leveraged over $44 million in heritage investments to support historic preservation, develop heritage attractions, and drive tourism to the region. This represents the total value of projects supported by the MPNHA, including matching funds from state, local, and private partners. Visitors can explore iconic sites like the Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon National Parks, stroll through the preserved pioneer architecture of Spring City, or take a scenic drive along Heritage Highway 89.
Whether you’re a history buff, an outdoor enthusiast, or simply looking for a meaningful travel experience, the Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area offers a chance to connect with the past and be inspired by the legacy of the pioneers. Come and discover the stories etched into the landscapes and communities of central and southern Utah – stories of perseverance, faith, and the indomitable spirit of the American West.
