Snow College theatre department to present ‘Bright Star’ musical

Bright Star director Jenn Chandler is a nationally-acclaimed actor and director on both stage and film. She is a graduate of Brigham Young University, with degrees in cello performance and theatre education.

Snow College’s theatre department will present Bright Star, a musical by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, under the direction of Jenn Chandler, beginning March 19 at the Eccles Center in Ephraim. Performances will run March 19-21 and March 26-28 at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday matinees scheduled for March 21 and 28 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are set at $12 for adults and $10 for youth and seniors.

According to the college’s fine art division, attendance is expected to increase during weekend performances.

The production tells the story of Alice Murphy, a literary editor whose past resurfaces when she encounters an aspiring young writer. Set in the American South during the 1920s and 1940s, the narrative moves between timelines, revealing details of Alice’s earlier life and the events that will shape her present.

Audiences will hear a score influenced by bluegrass traditions, which Chandler said is intended to reflect the regional setting and emotional tone of the story. The musical is based on a true story.

According to the theatre department, the production will highlight themes of resilience and hope, and the cast and crew will deliver a performance designed to engage a broad audience, including both regular theatergoers and first-time attendees.
