MOAB — The Gunnison Valley High School boys swim team captured the 2A South Region championship on Jan. 28 at the region meet in Moab, finishing first with 457 points.
Gunnison outpaced Millard High School, which placed second with 274 points, followed by Grand County with 175 points and Wasatch Academy with 18.
The Bulldogs delivered a dominant performance across individual and relay events, winning five of the 11 events contested and placing multiple swimmers near the top in nearly every race.
Gunnison opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, posting a winning time of 2:00.01. The Bulldogs continued to build momentum in individual events, with Aaden Donaldson winning the 200 freestyle in 2:02.35 and later claiming first place in the 100 freestyle in 53.95.
Ben Walker secured a win in the 200 individual medley, while Preston Waters captured first in the 50 freestyle. Adam Jackson added a victory in the 100 butterfly and later won the 100 breaststroke.
Gunnison also swept the top two spots in the 500 freestyle, with Jake Waters finishing first and Emery Kjar placing second.
Relay depth played a key role in the team title. Gunnison won the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay, while also placing its “B” relay teams in scoring positions.
The regional championship qualified Gunnison as one of two boys teams statewide to win a 2A region title, joining South Summit as the other boys champion. Teams now turn their attention to the first 2A-only state swimming championship, scheduled for Feb. 12 at Brigham Young University.
