Gunnison boys split Summit road trip with South Summit win
KAMAS — The Gunnison Valley High School boys basketball team split a pair of Region 15 road games last week, falling at North Summit before bouncing back with a win at South Summit.
Gunnison opened the trip Jan. 28 with a 66-56 loss to North Summit in Coalville. The Bulldogs matched the Braves early, finishing the first quarter tied at 18-18, but North Summit gained separation in the middle quarters and held off Gunnison down the stretch.
Gunnison trailed by three at halftime and could not close the gap in the second half as North Summit outscored the Bulldogs 31-24 over the final two quarters.
Senior Talan Dyreng led Gunnison with 11 points, while Daxton Knudsen contributed across the stat line with points, rebounds, and assists. Gunnison finished with 34 rebounds but struggled to slow North Summit’s balanced scoring attack.
Two nights later, Gunnison responded with a 56-52 win at South Summit, completing a season sweep of the Wildcats in Region 15 play.
The Bulldogs controlled much of the game and held off a late South Summit push to secure the road victory. The win marked Gunnison’s fifth region victory of the season and kept the Bulldogs in the upper half of the Region 15 standings.
The split left Gunnison at 14-6 overall and 5-3 in region play with two regular-season games remaining.
Gunnison is scheduled to return home to host Millard before closing the regular season on the road at North Sevier. Look for coverage on those games next week.
