Allan James Colby

Allan James Colby, 72, our husband, dad, and papa passed away on June 7, 2026 at his home in Manti, Utah.
Allan was born in Richfield, Utah on Nov. 4, 1953. He was the seventh of ten children born to Henry J. and Bessie Breinholt Colby. He had many great memories of his early life and spending time with his brothers and sisters in Ely, Nevada. The family moved to Manti in 1971 where Allan attended Manti High School where he met the love of his life, Jane Nielson.
Allan married his high school sweetheart, Jane, on March 17, 1973. Together they welcomed their daughter, Charmain, who passed away shortly after birth. Years later, Allan and Jane completed their family through adoption when they welcomed Kayden and Kayla into their home and hearts. Kayden and Kayla were a treasured answer to many prayers and remain one of Allan and Jane’s greatest joys.
Allan and Jane were sealed in 1984 in the Manti Temple. Through more than 53 years of marriage, they faced life’s joys and challenges together. During the many years of Allan’s declining health, Jane cared for him tirelessly with unwavering love and patience. Our family is grateful for her dedication and the countless ways she cared for him through the years.
Allan spent many years working as a coal miner with Canyon Fuel Company, where he formed lasting friendships and worked hard to provide for his family. Health issues eventually led to his retirement in 2003.
He served in many callings within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but his favorite was serving as a Primary teacher. Many Primary children knew him as “Candy Man Colby” because he always had candy in his pocket to share with anyone who asked.
Some of our best memories with dad were made outdoors. Whether he was behind the wheel of the Jeep, riding four-wheelers in the mountains, or spending time with family at Lake Powell, he loved being where the action was. His sense of humor and larger-than-life personality made him the center of many family adventures.
Being “Papa” was one of ad’s greatest joys. He treasured each of his grandchildren, but shared a unique bond with his grandson, Jack, who he had the privilege of babysitting nearly every day during Jack’s first four years. Whether they were watching cartoons, sharing snacks, going on adventures, or napping with one eye open, those years created a bond that remained special throughout dad’s life. While his health prevented him from spending as much time with Elsie and Korra as he would have liked, he loved them dearly and was proud to be their papa.
Allan was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Henry J. Colby Sr.; his parents-in-law, John Henrie and Renae Nielson; his brothers, Burke Colby and John Colby; his sisters, Edna Hobson and Ruth Hill; and his daughter, Charmain.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Nielson Colby; children Kayla (Felix) Omondi, and Kayden (Jill) Colby, three grandchildren: Jack Woolsey, Elsie Woolsey, and Korra Colby; brothers: Edwin Colby, Arthur Colby, Henry Colby Jr., Bill Colby, and Norman Colby. As well as sister-in-law, Gayla Colby.
We are especially grateful for the love and support provided by Nadean and Duane DeMill and Russell Nielson, whose kindness, willingness to help, and steadfast love meant so much to Dad and our family throughout the years. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the Intermountain Health Home Care and Hospice team for the compassionate care, comfort, and support they provided to Dad and our family.
After many years of health challenges, dad is finally at peace. While our hearts are heavy at his passing, we find comfort in knowing he has been reunited with loved ones who have gone before him and is free from pain and suffering. His sense of humor, love of adventure, and the memories he created with those who knew him will be remembered always.
