Gunnison boys advance to semifinals with 65-62 win over North Summit

OREM — Gunnison Valley kept its season alive Monday with a 65-62 win over North Summit in the 2A state quarterfinals at Utah Valley University.

The Bulldogs, now 17-7, defeated the Braves, who entered the game 20-3, in a tightly contested matchup that was part of the 2026 UHSAA 2A Boys Basketball State Championships.

Gunnison Valley trailed 31-25 at halftime before turning the game in the third quarter. The Bulldogs outscored North Summit 20-12 in the period and added 20 more points in the fourth to secure a three-point win.

Talan Dyreng led Gunnison Valley with 22 points, including three 3-pointers. Daxton Knudsen added 20 points and 18 rebounds. The Bulldogs held a 43-26 rebounding advantage, which proved pivotal in the outcome.

North Summit was led by Tayton Pace with 18 points. Kestin Richins and Cru Richins each scored 14 for the Braves.

The win advances Gunnison Valley to the 2A state semifinals. The Bulldogs are scheduled to face South Summit in the semifinal round at UVU. The semifinal game is Tuesday, Feb 24, but you won’t read this until after it is already over.

The outcome will determine whether Gunnison Valley advances to the 2A state championship game, scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 25 at UVU. Coverage of the final game/games will be in next week’s issue.
