GUNNISON—There’s a new dog in town, and it’s Gunnison Valley High School’s (GVHS) Mr. Bulldog 2017 Hunter Anderson.
Hunter, 18, was one of 13 male students chosen by the student body officers (SBO) who competed for the title in a school assembly last Tuesday, Feb. 14. In the past, there was an open call for contestants but “it got too crazy,” SBO Publicity Manager Bellamy Sorenson said.
At the assembly, the contestants were introduced with a “Mission Impossible” theme complete with fog, lasers, spotlights and spy-like poses.
Like traditional pageants, contestants showed off their talents, some even doubling up to do so. Talents including piano, singing and lip-synching. Hunter played the piano and sang “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw.
Caden Madsen performed a most unusual talent, a human water bottle flip, where he wrapped himself in plastic wrap and did a back flip.
Unlike other pageants, instead of a swimsuit competition, contestants had to show their prowess in completing certain tasks.
The secret agent men were divided into two teams for a relay race where they performed a variety of spy-like tasks including “rescuing” a person tied up in a chair, escaping through a hula hoop and shooting out a stack of cups with a marshmallow shooter.
In the end, Hunter Anderson emerged victorious with Parker Judy taking the place of first attendant and Hunter Peterson getting second attendant.
Judging was done by Miss Gunnison Valley (who happened to be Sorenson) and her attendants Madelyn Hill and Lakeisha Zufelt.
Hunter’s prize was $25 and a signed photo presented to him by Sorenson.
“We do this to build school spirit and to get the boys more involved,” Sorenson said.
Participants included the three winners and Henry Johnson, Teylor Pollock, Craig Jensen, Parker Shober, Dallin Jackson, Caden Madsen, Gage Peterson, Jared Chivers, Brandon Tucker and Tavish Miner.
