Ivan Darrell Barney

Ivan Darrell Barney, 77, passed away peacefully on Aug. 25, 2026, in Centerfield, Utah. He was born Oct. 3, 1948, in Payson, Utah, to Walter L. Barney and Isabella L. Keith.

Ivan grew up in Elberta, Utah, where he spent many happy years on the family farm. Those years remained an important part of his life and memories. After his father’s death, Ivan settled in Manti, Utah, where he would make his home for the remainder of his life.

Ivan was a beloved member of the Manti community. For a time, he served as the town historian, a fitting role for a man whose greatest passion throughout his life was family history.

He devoted countless hours to researching his family (and others), preserving stories, and learning about those who came before him. Family history was more than a hobby to Ivan — it was a lifelong pursuit and one of the ways he expressed his deep love for his family.

Ivan worked many different jobs throughout his life, but he spent much of his adult life working for Meals on Wheels. His work brought him into contact with many people in the community, and his kindness and genuine concern for others made a lasting impression. He was known as a kind, caring, and generous man and was beloved by many who had the privilege of knowing him.

Although Ivan and his wife, Eva Barney, eventually divorced, their relationship remained special. They continued to keep in touch and remained best friends, until his death.

Ivan was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was an active participant his whole life and his membership meant everything to him.

Ivan will be remembered for his gentle nature, his caring heart, his love of family and history, and the many lives he touched through simple acts of kindness. He took great joy in discovering the stories of those who came before him and in preserving that heritage for future generations.

Ivan is survived by his nieces and nephews, Randy Bruner, Wendel Bruner, Lori Godfrey, Jennifer Tyler, Tami Fiack, Eric Barney, Stacy Turner, Alaina Gull, and Tony Barney. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter L. Barney and Isabella L. Keith; his brother, Keith Barney (Launa Barney); and his sister, Veila Horrocks (Faye Horrocks).

Ivan’s life was one of quiet service, meaningful connections, and an enduring devotion to family. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many people in the Manti community who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026 at 1 p.m. in the Manti 9th Ward Relief Society room. Viewing will be held prior to services starting at noon.
