Joseph Seth Barney passed away quietly on Nov. 11, 2016 in Payson.
Joseph was born April 11, 1926 in Price to John and Violet Barney. He grew up in Springville. Joseph graduated from Springville High School in 1944. He married Carma Wintch on Oct. 18, 1952. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
Joe, as he was commonly known, was a kind and gentle man who willingly helped others. He is survived by his wife Carma and their five children: Susan (Mike) Speight, Millard (Lisa), Steven (Ellie), Wayne (Cynthia Mae) and Del (Yvonne) Barney. Joe had two children from a prior marriage, Lynnette Rose and Dennis (Sheila).
Joe held many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including bishop, stake Sunday School president, and gospel doctrine instructor. He was an ordinance worker in the Manti Temple for 14 years. Joe and Carma served an 18-month mission. Additionally, he served as a Scoutmaster. He and Carma served together as Mormon Miracle Pageant dinner chairpersons. Joe was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow in the Rotary Club, of which he was a member for many years. During World War II, he served three years in the U.S. Navy. Joe was employed in a 32-year career as a professional scouter with the Boy Scouts of America.
Joe’s last couple of years were spent living in the Central Utah Veterans Home in Payson. He often joked that he had outlived all his childhood friends from his youthful days so he always had to make new friends in his advanced years.
The family would like to thank all the friends and relatives in Joe’s life, also thanks to the staff at the Payson Vet’s home for the special care they all gave him.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016 at 1 p.m. in the Manti City Cemetery with military honors by the Manti American Legion Post #31. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti. Online guestbook at www.maglebymortuary.com.
