Lorraine Shand Raines

Lorraine Shand Raines passed away Sept. 21, 2021 at the age of 92.

Lorraine “Raine” was the first child born to Leda Olsen Shand and David Arthur Shand on Aug. 21, 1929 in Manti. Being the eldest of seven children, Lorraine took on the role of mother when Leda passed away in 1951, until Art married another angel, Mama Merie.

Raine moved to San Francisco where she worked and earned her teaching certification. She taught in Alaska for several years, then accepted a teaching position in Okinawa, Japan to teach military elementary children.

While in Okinawa she met her husband-to-be, Tom Raines. When they returned to the states, they married and lived in Ramona, California. When Tom passed away of esophageal cancer, Raine and her sister Ardith moved to Ephraim. They bought a home and lived there for 17 years before moving to St. George, when Raine passed away.

Lorraine loved the beauty of nature and was a craftsman and artisan. She had a heart as big as life and was always willing to give, support, assist, sacrifice and take the ‘back seat’ for those less fortunate, human or animal. On her 80th birthday she fulfilled a dream and skydived from an airplane. She made a perfect landing.

Raine requested her ashes be scattered along the Skyline Drive where her husband’s ashes await for hers to join his. Raine, you have forever touched our hearts with your kindness and caring demeanor. You are greatly loved and will be dearly missed.

Raine is survived by siblings Patricia Shand Lund, Donald David Shand, Janet Shand Paulson, Jerrie Shand Frank, and Ardith Shand; and her nephew Craig Lund, whom she took under her wing.
