Moroni City Council appoints new member

MORONI—A man who lost last year in a contest for Moroni City Council has been appointed to fill a seat vacated by Troy Prestwich, was elected as the town’s new mayor.
Kevin Taylor, who ran against Jacob Bagley in the November election for a two-year term, was the only applicant for the position. His term will run through 2027.
The appointment occurred at the city’s first council meeting of the year on Jan. 15.
Taylor retired from Ashgrove Cement in Leamington, Millard County. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Moroni and have lived in the city for the past 17 years.
In his application, Taylor said he wanted to be involved in directing future growth, while helping Moroni continue to be a small town with a safe atmosphere.
He said, “I offer my time, commitment and desire to serve our community. I bring knowledge of the questions, concerns and complaints of the people. I gained this (knowledge) while talking to them face to face while running for city council.”
At the same meeting, Sarah Bench, Kaylee Prestwich and Augustin Rodriguez were appointed four-year terms on the Moroni Planning and Zoning Commission.
The council also reviewed a mid-fiscal year financial report prepared by Gary Keddington, who works on contract as the city’s financial advisor.
The report showed revenue was a little behind the 50 percent one might expect at the midway point in the fiscal year. Between the first of July and end of December, $481,335 came into the general fund. That represented approximately 42 percent of the general fund budget for the fiscal year.
However, expenditures appeared to be right on track. In the first six months, the city spent $522,811, or 50.8 percent of the $1,028,028 budgeted for expenditures.
Cash in the bank at the mid-year point, which included revenue from utilities, the cemetery and other business-type activities was $2.63 million.
The council agenda showed that five city vehicles had been designated as “surplus” and were being offered for sale.
They were a 1986 International Harvester S2500 dump truck, a 2000 Chevy pickup truck, a 2004 Ford F-550 pickup truck, a 2007 Chevrolet Impala sedan and a 2916 Dodge Charger sedan.
