North Sanpete girls roll Logan in 3A first round
MT. PLEASANT — Second-seeded North Sanpete wasted no time taking control Saturday afternoon, overwhelming No. 15 Logan 85-24 in the first round of the 3A state tournament at North Sanpete High School.
The Hawks jumped out to a 30-2 lead after the first quarter and never let up, building a 55-11 advantage by halftime. North Sanpete outscored Logan 20-2 again in the third quarter to put the game firmly out of reach.
Mariah Schlappi led the Hawks with 26 points, knocking down two 3-pointers. Malia Schlappi added 14 points with two 3-pointers of her own, and Elsie Bailey chipped in 11 points.
North Sanpete’s defense set the tone early. Logan managed just two points in the opening quarter and two more in the third, finishing with 24 total points. The Grizzlies scored nine in the second and 11 in the fourth but were unable to overcome the early deficit.
The win moves North Sanpete to 19-5 overall on the season. The Hawks entered the tournament riding a 13-game winning streak and a perfect 8-0 mark in Region 13 play.
The victory advances North Sanpete to the quarterfinal round, where the Hawks are scheduled to face Grantsville at 5:50 p.m. Thursday in the 3A state tournament.
