GUNNISON—Seven contestants took the stage Saturday, March 29, at the annual Miss Gunnison Valley Scholarship Pageant, where judges crowned Gunnison resident Tenley Wanner the 2025 Miss Gunnison.

Tenley, daughter of Michael and Mekesha Wanner, will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Wanner, wearing a blue costume that reflected her poise and confidence, impressed the audience with a lyrical dance solo to the song “Rainbow,”

According to Pageant Director Marlo Taylor, Wanner plans to use her title to promote her platform, “Looking Beyond the Glucose: Spreading Awareness and Support for Type 1 Diabetes.”

As part of her initiative, Wanner hopes to distribute Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) Empowerment Kits to families with newly diagnosed children and teens.

First attendant honors went to Nila Peterson, daughter of Andy and Stacey Peterson of Mayfield, who will receive a $500 scholarship. Her talent was a violin solo performance of “Amazing Grace.”

Hailey Murray, daughter of Dusti Murray of Mayfield, was named second attendant and awarded a $250 scholarship. Her talent was the presentation of an original poem titled “HERstory.”

Other awards included Miss Congeniality, presented to Mary Lyons of Gunnison, daughter of Mark and Anita Lyons, in recognition of her kindness and positive spirit. She received a $100 cash scholarship.

Miss Photogenic went to Italia Ashton, daughter of Tyler and Adrie Ashton of Gunnison, who also received a $100 scholarship.

Contestants were judged on talent, evening wear, an on-stage question and fitness. Prior to the pageant, they all underwent 10-minute personal interviews with a panel of judges.

The event featured several guest performances, including violin and dance numbers by local royalty and attendants.

“This newly crowned Miss Gunnison Valley 2025 is looking forward to serving our valley in so many upcoming events,” Taylor said. “We want to extend our deepest thanks to the local businesses, families, and community members who continue to support this program. It’s because of you that we’re able to provide opportunities for growth, confidence and leadership.”

Taylor added that community support remains essential to offering scholarships. “We are so grateful to be part of a valley that continually shows up with heart and hometown pride,” she said. “Thank you for helping us build something truly meaningful—together.”
