
Betty Ann Wing Bertelson, 93, passed away Oct. 1, 2016.
She was born in on Feb. 13, 1923 in Mammoth, Utah to Joseph Burn and Therese Freston Wing as a twin to Jack and a younger sister to Kathyrn, Ed and Bob.
Her early years were spent on the Wing Ranch outside of Eureka, Utah; later she, her brothers and mother moved to an Indian reservation where her mother worked as a teacher.
She attended Wasatch Academy and Snow College, where she met her future husband, Eugene Bertelson. Betty moved to Los Angeles and she and Gene were married there in 1946; they returned to Utah and their first daughter Kris was born there. In 1951 they moved to southern California for good and lived in Hawthorne while Betty attended UCLA getting a teaching credential. After daughter Julie was born the family relocated to Carson, California.
Betty enjoyed a long career as a special education teacher and guidance counselor in the South Bay, at Torrance, North Torrance and Lawndale High Schools. She also attended Long Beach State and earned a master’s degree in Psychology.
After retiring from Centinela Valley UHSD, Betty and Gene relocated to Oceanside, California. They enjoyed traveling; their favorites were cruises, visiting the U.K., and road trips to check in with relatives and friends. Betty stayed in Oceanside after Gene’s passing in 2004; she was active as a volunteer with the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library and the Oceanside Welcome Center, and also enjoyed luncheons with the local CalRTA Chapter of retired teachers.
Betty was preceded in death by her siblings Kathryn, Ed, Bob, and Jack, and her husband Gene; she is survived by her loving daughters Kris Williams (Greg) of McArthur, California and Julie Hajek (Rob) of Monrovia, California, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
