KANAB— It was the running back duo of Monte Johnson and Degan Swapp that couldn’t be stopped on Friday night, as the Kanab Cowboys took down the Gunnison Bulldogs 20-8 in the 1A Football Quarterfinals.
After a scoreless first quarter, Kanab entered the half up 6-0 courtesy of a 6-yard touchdown run from senior Degan Swapp. Entering the 4th quarter still only up 6 points, the Cowboys were able to extend their lead after a 19-yard touchdown catch from Monte Johnson, thrown by junior Brennan Orton. The Bulldogs were able to get one back with a few minutes left after a two-yard touchdown run, but they couldn’t hold on as a 36-yard run from Cowboy senior Latimer Glover sealed their fate.
Kanab looked strong on both sides of the ball, and are hoping to repeat as state champions. Sophomore Monte Johnson helped establish a strong run game, as he ran 112 yards on 14 carries. The game saw seven different players run the ball for the Cowboys. Junior Grady Anderson proved to be the difference maker on defense, recording 12 tackles and two interceptions, as they held Gunnison to just 8 points.
The Bulldogs finish the season at 4-6, in a year that included dominant wins and tough losses.
