GUNNISON— “All’s well that ends well” may be the phrase to describe the Bulldogs after an up and down week.

Gunnison Valley baseball had a rough start to the week as they were trampled by the region top dog Duchesne last Tuesday, 15-4, but they recovered effectively in pulling out a lower-scoring 6-4 win against South Sevier last Friday, handing South Sevier only their second loss of the season. Gunnison’s record moved to 5-10 overall with a 2-4 record in the 2A East region.
Pitching consistency proved a struggle against the powerful Eagles as Gunnison sent three different pitchers to the mound. None of them had a particularly great evening as they combined to allow 16 hits, more than half the total batters faced, against only five strikeouts. When the game headed into the bottom of the fourth inning with a narrow 4-3 margin for Duchesne, the Eagles broke it open with eight runs in the inning to shut the door on the Bulldogs. Junior Jake Sorensen collected two RBI to lead the team from the plate.
Against South Sevier, the Bulldogs relied again on their defense, and it worked this time. Gunnison’s pitcher allowed only five hits in 27 batters faced, and the fielding did good work as the Bulldogs snuck past one of 2A’s top teams in the last few innings. Sorensen again led with two RBI, while junior Kyler Cox hit a triple.
The Bulldogs are on the road for a doubleheader against Monticello on Tuesday, then they’ll travel to face Enterprise on Wednesday.
