GUNNISON—The Bulldogs’ winning ways continue with a trio of tournament wins over last weekend.
Playing in the Gunnison-North Sevier Tournament, Gunnison’s baseball team picked up wins against rival Manti, 10-3, South Summit, 12-2, and Kanab, 6-3.
The Bulldogs started off hot against the Templars, running in six scores in the second inning, and the never looked back en route to the win. As the Templar pitchers walked Gunnison batters 11 times, the Bulldogs made the most of it with excellent base running, stealing four bases. Just four hits were enough for a potent Bulldog offense. Sophomore Parx Bartholomew led Gunnison with three runs, while senior Drew Hill pitched eight strikeouts.
South Summit proved no match for the Bulldogs’ momentum. Gunnison led 8-0 after three innings, including a home run by senior Jaden Mayne. Mayne led the team with three RBIs on the day. Once again, the Bulldogs ran the bases exceptionally well, stealing seven. On defense, senior Gage Mogle led the effort with 10 putouts.
Mogle, Hill and Mayne all took turns to pitch. Mayne pitched six strikeouts and only allowed two hits.
Gunnison finished up their time at the tournament with a third win over Kanab, ranked No. 5 in 2A, and the 6-3 final score made it the closest. The Cowboys effectively kept Hill off of home plate, but in stepped junior Colton Roberts to pick up the pace. Roberts hit a triple and had three RBIs off two hits to lead the Bulldogs. At the mound, Bartholomew took the win after a field day, pitching 10 strikeouts to four hits. The only tarnish in Bartholomew’s performance came from a home run hit off the bat of one of Kanab’s seniors.
Gunnison’s record now stands at 7-1, and the Bulldogs are ranked No. 2 in 2A by Deseret News polls, second only to undefeated Grand County.
Gunnison had an intercounty contest against North Sanpete on Tuesday (score next week) and will be at home for a doubleheader tomorrow against San Juan, with the game times slated for 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The Bulldogs will travel to face Monticello in a doubleheader next Tuesday.
