FAIRVIEW—Recipients of the 2022 CentraCom college scholarships include two high school seniors from Sanpete County.

Tayten Jax King
Gunnison Valley High School
Rachael Jones
North Sanpete High School

Rachael Jones from North Sanpete High School was awarded a $750 scholarship, which she will take to Utah Valley University in the fall.

Tayten Jax King of Gunnison Valley High School was awarded a $2,000 scholarship, $1,500 of which is from Centracom and the additional $500 from Snow College, where he will attend in the fall.

“We are very impressed with the strength of all that applied,” says a CentraCom press release. The winners “were picked from those applicants based on academic achievement, strength in leadership and service in the community.”

The scholarship may be used for any college expense, such as tuition, books, housing, etc.

Applying for the scholarship involved students submitting an original and creative essay, noteworthy involvement in community service and school activities, and future goals demonstrating a genuine interest in continuing education, the CentraCom press release explained.

With a 4.0 GPA, Jones is a Science Sterling Scholar, was named to the Utah High School Activities Association (USHAA) all-state teams for track and cross-country, is president of the National Honors Society and is vice president of the French Club.

Jones recently applied for and received a $5,000 grant for the Sanpete Food Pantry and raised funds in several other ways for the organization. She also planted trees and cleaned up garbage along the Jordan River in Salt Lake County as part of a conservation effort.

In addition to attending college, Jones plans to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is described as humble, upstanding, inquisitive and a philanthropist.

King lettered in baseball and has been on the honor roll throughout high school. He has excelled in business courses. King has worked part-time while attending high school and has also been active in performing service in the community.

At Snow College, King will pursue a degree in business focusing on entrepreneurship.
