City council considers broad fee increases for Fountain Green services

FOUNTAIN GREEN—A fee schedule for everything from burial services to dog-at-large tickets and dance hall rentals was presented to the Fountain Green City Council on Jan. 22.

The schedule includes the substantially higher water and sewer impact fees, which caused some controversy when they were passed late last year.

Mayor Willard Wood brought up the need to increase cemetery fees, currently $300 for residents and $900 for non-residents, which are much lower than neighboring towns and may not cover perpetual upkeep of the cemetery.
He also mentioned the possibility non-resident scalpers could buy up burial spaces and sell them for profit. The council will discuss the fees at the February council meeting.

The council also discussed the secondary water meter connection fee of $365, which doesn’t cover the cost of the meter itself. This will also be discussed further in the February meeting.

In January, Mayor Wood approved new stucco and repairs at the dance hall due to water that had seeped through the existing stucco and caused damage inside the building. Bathroom tiles have had to be removed and replaced.

Wood approved the repairs on an emergency basis due to urgency. Such emergency approvals are allowed by city policy. The council ratified the approval during the January meeting.

The repairs include the new stucco as well as a moisture barrier that comes with a 15-year warranty. The total cost was $10,600 with half the amount paid by a private donation.
