Coach Roger Watson looking to recruit young girls for junior basketball team

MANTI—Lady Templars basketball coach Roger Watson is on the lookout for elementary and middle school girls who are interested in playing basketball this season, with the objective to prepare them for high school ball.
Watson and volunteer coaches have launched a free basketball skills camp aimed at developing fundamental skills for third grade to eighth grade girls.
“The main reason I want to do this is to help girls learn and develop basketball skills and to increase the number of girls playing basketball in Ephraim and Manti,” Watson told the Messenger. “The biggest thing is preparing them to have a chance to play high school basketball when they’re older.”
Sixth to eighth grade girls will make up the Jr. Lady Templars team. The skills camp begins Sept. 12 and practice times are Monday through Wednesday from 5-7 p.m.
Watson says eighth grade girls will have the chance to play in tournaments later in the season.
For Manti Elementary third to fifth graders, the program begins on Thursday, Sept. 22, with practice times every Thursday from 3-4 p.m.
Watson says he and his group of volunteer coaches hope to include Ephraim elementary girls in the camps, but they still need extra coaching help to finalize the third to sixth grade teams.
Before the program starts, Watson says he hopes to have a few more coaches for both Ephraim and Manti on board who are good with kids and dedicated to helping girls develop their skills.
