Council vacancy and appointment procedures

MT. PLEASANT—Mt. Pleasant is preparing to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Councilman Jake Howcroft.

Six individuals have applied for the position: Ron Phelps, Dan Simons, Molly Brotherson, Sterling Whipple, Eddie Kim Shelley and Jim Wilberg.

A special council meeting was scheduled for Oct. 19 to interview applicants.

The council passed an ordinance establishing a procedure for resolving tied votes when appointing individuals to vacant municipal offices.

If the final two candidates are tied after voting, the ordinance provides for a coin toss to determine the appointment.

City Recorder Natalie Crosby discussed procedures for the appointment process, including candidate interviews, uniform questions and recording council member votes.

The council also reviewed proposals from applicants interested in providing city-attorney and city prosecutor services.

Following a closed session, Olsen reported that the council wanted to arrange online meetings with the applicants before making a selection.
