CUCF inmates charged after alleged group attack in Gunnison

GUNNISON — Multiple inmates at the Central Utah Correctional Facility (CUCF) in Gunnison have been charged with attempted murder after prosecutors allege they took part in a group assault on another inmate.

According to 6th District Court documents, five inmates had been charged with attempted murder: Santiago De Los Sant Ramos, 55; Juan Valencia, 37; Luis Maximiliano Jimenez, 28; Enrique Deloza, 35; and Martin Munoz, 34. The charge is listed as a first-degree felony.

According to Sanpete County prosecutors, the attack happened Sept. 2, 2025, at the prison in Gunnison and involved at least a half-dozen inmates. Prosecutors allege the men attacked another inmate together and intended to kill him.

The assault involved weapons and at least one inmate allegedly throwing boiling water onto the victim’s face. The victim also suffered injuries that included bruising and cuts consistent with slashing. Prosecutors said the exact weapons were not known, but prison-made shanks were suspected.

Additional inmates were being screened for possible charges.
