MT. PLEASANT— The North Sanpete Hawks suffered a heartbreaking loss to rival Delta last Friday by a score of 32-12.

The Hawks went down quickly, giving up a touchdown in the first quarter on a 40-yard run from Rabbits’ junior back, Dallin Draper.

Sophomore quarterback Chance Clawson brought the Hawks back with a 15-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Waylon Atkinson during the first quarter.

From there, the Rabbits began to dominate, scoring three unanswered touchdowns, courtesy of another long run from 50 yards out by Draper, followed by two more touchdown runs, 40 yards and 15 yards, from senior backs Reygan Riding and Jack Dutson.

Clawson responded late in the fourth quarter with another touchdown pass to Atkinson before the Rabbits scored once again on the ground, this one coming from junior back Jake Day.

Clawson is the current starter for the Hawks, replacing junior quarterback Spencer Steadman after Steadman took a hard hit against Maple Mountain, breaking his collarbone. North Sanpete head coach Rhett Bird says that hopes to see Steadman return in about 2-3 weeks.

The young Clawson has struggled in his absence, but has the faith of his coaches and teammates.

“It’s always tough with injuries, but we will keep getting better from week to week,” Bird says. “We are young and are gaining the experience we need each week.”

With the loss now behind them, the Hawks now prepare for their upcoming matchup against their Sanpete County neighbor, Manti. North Sanpete and Manti have played each other five times since 2010, and Manti has won every time.
