FOUNTAIN GREEN—Creative expression is something Fountain Green Elementary teacher Selena Shelly believes kids should explore and has implemented a weekly event for kids to do just that.
Shelly heads the art department at the school and holds art specials every Monday for kids in kindergarten through sixth-grade.
For the last week of November, kids painted abstract pieces with colorful flowers. Inscribed on the stems of flowers is a variety of poems the students learned during that art session, such as “A Bed in the Leaves” by Marian Kennedy.
Each week a different group of students gets to create a “masterpiece,” which ties into other forms of literature and creative arts. Afterward, the art is displayed on a dedicated “art wall” for everyone who passes to enjoy.
