Gunnison Valley outworks Manti on the mound in non-region performance

Gunnison Valley’s Axton Sorenson goes for the bunt at home against Manti on Monday, March 30.

GUNNISON—In a game where opportunities were fairly even, Gunnison Valley’s execution on the mound made the difference against Manti.

The Bulldogs rode a strong pitching performance from Waylon Sorenson and Braxton Pickett, along with timely hitting, Monday, March 30, to secure a 3-1 win over the Templars in a tightly contested non-region matchup.

The Bulldogs finished with seven hits to Manti’s six, and while neither team committed more than one error, Gunnison Valley separated itself with efficiency in key moments, both at the plate and on the hill.

Gunnison Valley broke through in the second inning with the game’s first run, then added breathing room in the fourth, stringing together enough offense to push the lead to 3-0. Manti responded in the fifth inning with its lone run, but could not build on the momentum. Despite generating six hits and putting runners on base in multiple innings, the Templars were consistently turned away by Sorenson and Pickett.

The Bulldogs’ pitchers delivered one of their most complete efforts of the season, limiting Manti to one run while scattering six hits and avoiding big innings. Gunnison Valley’s pitchers controlled the pace by throwing strikes, keeping hitters off balance and stranding runners when it mattered most.

Manti’s Russell Squire and Zach Blackham did their part to keep things close, striking out seven while issuing three walks. Squire allowed two earned runs over 3.1 innings. His outing gave the Templars a chance, but the offense could not find the timely hit to match it.

That contrast told the story.

While both teams found ways to get on base, Gunnison Valley made its pitches in high-leverage spots and produced the key swings earlier in the game. The Bulldogs did not overwhelm Manti. They out-executed the Templars.

With the win, Gunnison Valley improved to 12-2 and continued a strong early-season run.
