LOGAN—The Gunnison Valley High School student council attended the Utah State University Leadership Conference on June 6-8 in Logan.

The Gunnison High School student council participated in the Student Leadership Conference June 6-8 at Utah State University. Council members are decked out in blue after participating in a Spirit Bowl during the leadership conference at USU.

The council has attended this same conference in past years and loves the things it teaches council members to get them ready for the next year.

The student council was able to show their blue pride at the Spirit Bowl, flaunt their best dance moves in the dance battle and challenge themselves at the ropes course. Council members also attend- ed multiple workshops and round tables.

The workshops they attended taught them how to create a welcoming environment, how to plan and prepare for school activities and events, how to connect on social media and communicate with their peers, how to create friendships and relationships through a team to collaborate better, how to turn dreams into plans and achieve their goals, how to solve problems, and most importantly how to become good leaders.

At the round tables they got to share their ideas, traditions and themes from GVHS. They got to hear from other student council members and find ways to implement some of their schools’ ideas, traditions and themes into their 2022-2023 school year.

The theme the GVHS student council chose is “Stronger Together.” The council members chose this theme because they understand it takes a unified school and community to become something great. They want to focus on making students feel loved and included at GVHS. They want to see more involvement and school spirit from their peers at events and activities for this upcoming year.

The council members were very productive and had a great time at the conference.

On Friday, June 29, they furthered their training at the summer student council lockdown at GVHS. This provided time for the student council to finish their planning and get tasks completed in preparation for the upcoming school year.

They did team bonding exercises. They heard from Brenda Bartholomew, CEO of the Gunnison Valley Hospital, on how to deal respectfully with conflict, and they also went repelling.

The 2022-2023 GVHS student council members are so excited for this school year and they can’t wait to share their fun ideas with the community and students.
