You might say the North Sanpete High School softball team had an excellent week.
The Lady Hawks (7-5, 1-2 in 3A Region 14) went 4-2, with all of their four wins coming by six runs or more and the wins coming by an average of 12.3 runs.
North Sanpete started the week by winning 23-0 at South Sevier. The Lady Hawks got their 23 runs on just 19 hits while scoring 10 runs in one inning and eight in another. Lexie Green had two home runs and four runs batted in and Lucy Oldroyd and Emma Wightman each had three. Oldroyd, Heather Howarth and Graciee Christiansen each hit homers.
“The South Sevier game was a good one for our team,” Coach Landon Bailey said. “We hit the ball really well and our pitchers did a good job of going right at their hitters. All of the team did their job and helped us get the win.”
North Sanpete faced a tough task in their rivalry game at Manti because the Lady Templars were ranked No. 1 in 3A. The Lady Hawks lost 5-3. Madyson Steadman drove in two RBIs.
“The Manti game was a very fun and competitive high school softball game. Manti is the number one team in 3A for a reason and we knew we would have to play really well to compete with them,” Bailey said. “Graciee Christiansen pitched a great game and gave us a chance. Manti’s pitcher [Tiffany Hermansen] is very good and she did a great job of keeping us off-balance and making it tough for us to get any hits. We had our chances, but just didn’t quite get it done.”
Steadman’s hit was “big,” Bailey said.
“She is just a freshman and she is getting better every single game,” Bailey said.
The Lady Hawks lost 8-4 to Lehi in the first game of the Payson Tournament. Oldroyd hit two home runs.
“We couldn’t get our bats going and we struggled to score runs,” Bailey said. “Lucy Oldroyd did have a great game and ended up with two home runs. She is really starting to help us with her hitting. She is very strong and when she hits the ball, it seems to go a long ways.”
Also in the tournament, North Sanpete beat American Fork 11-2, Payson 10-4 and Gunnison Valley 14-3. Against American Fork, Tyler Jo Miramontes and Payton Johnson each had two RBIs, with a home run from Miramontes. Against Payson, Howarth drove in three RBIs and hit a home run. Against Gunnison Valley, Oldroyd had three RBIs and she and Howarth each hit a home run.
