Lady Bulldogs are impressive in first season opener over Richfield

RICHFIELD—Simply put, the season couldn’t have started much better than it did for the Lady Bulldogs last week.

Propelled by strong hitting through the whole lineup, Gunnison softball trounced 3A Richfield in three innings, 23-4, last Tuesday in their season opener to move to 1-0 on the season ahead of the March Warm-up Classic in St. George next weekend.

“The team jumped on Richfield early with great at-bats,” coach Sara Ellsworth said. “It was our first time on a field this year, so our defense struggled a bit. It was a great way to start the season and excite the girls about the rest of the year.”

Senior Kennedi Knudsen led a nightmarishly good lineup of hitters as she notched six RBI with the help of a big home run. It was one of three home runs for the Lady Bulldogs as juniors Rilee Dyreng and Lexee Kiesel hit a home run each. Freshman Maile Ha’O hit a double and triple as well, notching four RBI in her first-ever varsity game.

The Lady Bulldogs have a quick date with South Sevier on the road this Tuesday, and then a gauntlet awaits them down south, as they’ll take on Hillcrest, Id., then 5A Maple Mountain and 3A Morgan on Friday. They’ll then face 6A West Jordan and 5A Timpanogos on Saturday to wrap up the Classic.
