MT. PLEASANT—The Lady Hawks are starting this basketball season in an unfamiliar place—the win column.
North Sanpete girls’ basketball team began the season last week with a thoroughly encouraging victory over former region foe Maeser Prep, 51-26, last Friday to move to 1-0 overall for the first time since 2016. It was only the second time in seven seasons that North Sanpete had won their season opener and the first time under current Coach Taylor Christensen.
The Lady Hawks’ 25-point margin of victory matched the margin of their last home game against the Lions, who are now 0-2 on the season. It was the first time since 2019 that North Sanpete scored more than 50 points in a single game.
Junior Tylee Henrie led all scorers in the game with 16 points, while junior Kortley Cook and senior Eryn Briggs each scored 11 points. Briggs was effective from distance as she made three 3-pointers. Briggs was a top-10 3-point shooter in 3A last season, and the trend looks to be continuing.
The Lady Hawks were in control of the game from nearly the very beginning. After the teams traded baskets on their first possessions, North Sanpete pulled ahead, 12-2, before another wild layup by Maeser Prep lucked its way into the hoop. North Sanpete gradually and methodically pulled away, outscoring the lions in every quarter.
The Lady Hawks are off this week and will be up against Summit Academy at home next Tuesday.
