MANTI—The Manti soccer team finished a tough pre-season schedule on Tuesday Aug. 30 by loosing a close game to top ranked Waterford 2-1.

The Lady Templars opened league play on Thursday Sept. 1 by hosting North Sevier. Manti controlled the game, jumping ahead 4-0 at the half and then scoring four more times in the second period for an 8-0 shutout win.

Against the Wolves, Manti opened the game strong, getting five shots on goal in the first 5 minutes of play. At the 5:20 mark, Jamie Bawden sent a corner kick across the front of the goal where Caylie Olson headed it in for the first goal of the game.

The Templars were content to take longer shots for the next 15 minutes and then got back into their offense.

Crossing passes by Brynee Golding and Bawden gave Manti better looks at the goal, and at the 21-minute mark, a pass from Olson set up Bawden for a score, followed by a pass from Avalin Cook that led to a goal by Morganne Stevens. Near the end of the half, Bawden scored again to give Manti its 4-0 lead.

Manti continued to control the field in the second half, getting another goal from Bawden and Stevens, along with scores by Cook and Annie Hammer.

“I was really proud of them,” said coach Eleshia Steinfeldt. “There were things we worked on in practice that I saw in the game.”

This week the Templars will play at Emery. The Spartans are “always very hard fighters,” Steinfeldt said. “They are a team you can’t overlook.”
