The Manti team consisted of Mathew Olson, an aspiring engineer, along with Kaylee Olson, Joshua Pells, Grace Draper, Allison Olson. Their coach was Jared Eliason.
During the competition, Mathew Olson, Grace Draper and Allison Olson took driving responsibilities while Kaylee Olson and Joshua Pells served as the pit crew.
Eliason said the team all flourished in their roles during the competition.
Manti High competed with 11 other high school teams and five middle school teams. The deciding factor in the race was the precise engineering that went into the car, Eliason said.
Specifically, the team team made modifications in the electrical wiring that enabled the car to maintain speed at 95% during the duration of the 90-minute race.
“I was unsure if we were going to get the wiring to work in time, but in the end, it worked perfectly,” Mathew Olson said.
Eliason said everybody on the team had an enjoyable time and learned engineering and teamwork skills.
