CASTLE DALE—The Region 15 Speech and Debate Competition, where Manti High School represented itself well among stiff competition, was held at Emery High School on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
Manti High School represented itself well among stiff competition from Grand County High School, Gunnison Valley High School and Emery High School. At the end of the day, the Templars came up three points shy of the region championship, losing to Grand County High School and taking second place. The top three schools were separated by a 7-point margin, with Grand County scoring 77 points followed by Manti with 74 and Emery with 72.
Manti’s team is an interesting combination of veteran debaters, led by 11 seniors and supported by many first-time debaters who did remarkably well. Jaymi Miller placed second in Oratory with Jessica Everitt taking the first-place medal. Manti swept the Impromptu category with Kyler Nelson taking first, Joshua Peterson second and Kjerstin Birch third. Stephen Kent was the only Templar to place in Student Congress, taking third place. Kyler Nelson managed to take another first-place medal in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Brayden Shelley was named Best Chairman of Student Congress.
“I am so proud of all of these students for their hard work all year,” Coach Eric Peterson said. “They represent the ideals of Manti High School and our district so very well.”
At the same competition Gunnison Valley High School students also did well. Hunter Peterson and Tyler Francis finished fourth in Public Forum, and Alexander Stewart, Garrett Francis and Dylan Nielsen all qualified for state.
