MT. PLEASANT—The new year has not started off as hoped for the North Sanpete boys varsity basketball team.

After December ended with a collection of close losses, the Hawks losing streak extended out to five, with losses to Salem Hills and South Summit by respective scores of 81-61 and 61-49 last week. The losses drop the Hawks to a humbling 2-11 on the season so far.

`           North Sanpete simply could not keep up with Salem Hills, a perennial 4A contender, who used the momentum of a dominating second quarter to their advantage, outscoring North Sanpete 27-9. Senior Justice Green led the Hawks with 11 points, hitting three three-pointers.

Against South Summit, the curse of the second quarter came against to haunt the Hawks, who were outscored 24-5 in that quarter by the Wildcats. South Summit held a 56-31 at the end of the third quarter, but a furious rally by North Sanpete brought the game back into the realm of respectability. The Hawks outscored the Wildcats 18-5 in the final quarter. Green once again led the Hawks with 10 points.

The Hawks hosted Carbon last night and will host Richfield tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Richfield is 4-7 so far on the season. The two games mark the start of region play for North Sanpete.
