MT. PLEASANT—Eight innings, two comebacks and a final late surge told the story for North Sanpete on Friday as the Hawks erased an early four-run deficit, answered a seventh-inning setback and scored twice in the eighth to slip past Canyon View 7-6 in a back-and-forth non-conference win at home.

North Sanpete finished with 10 hits, led by Hudson Smith’s three-hit, three-RBI and home run performance. The sophomore went 4-for-5 with a run scored, setting the tone as the Hawks chipped away throughout the game.

Canyon View struck first with a run in the opening inning and extended its lead to 3-1 through four frames. With the win over Canyon View, the Hawks’ record improved to 5-6 overall.

Hawks end the Rabbits’ win streak

North Sanpete edged Delta High School 3-2 in a non-region baseball game Tuesday at home, handing the Rabbits their first loss of the season.

The Hawks broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run third inning and made it stand, holding Delta to just one run over the final five innings to secure the win.

Delta (10-1) struck first with a run in the opening inning, but North Sanpete answered in the bottom half and took control in the third. The Rabbits added a run in the sixth, but couldn’t push across a tying score late in the game.

Swapp recorded two runs, and Smith answered the call with a run of his own, as Costello and Williams each logged an RBI in their three plate appearances. Swapp and Smith also had a steal each in the game. North Sanpete finished with four hits, while Delta was limited to two hits and committed four errors.

From the mound, Swapp logged the win with a 1.17 ERA, allowing only two hits, striking out nine and walking two. Jaydyn Robinson was credited with the save for the Hawks, tossing no-hit relief against four batters and striking out one Delta batter in the final inning.

The loss marked Delta’s lowest-scoring game of the season after entering the contest averaging double-digit runs.
