North Sanpete’s two-score cushion holds off Manti

Hawks improve to 6-2, Templars fall to 1-7 in standings

MANTI—North Sanpete football built a 14-point halftime lead and beat Manti 36-21 Thursday, Oct. 1, in a 3A South game between Sanpete County rivals.

The Hawks improved to 6-2, while Manti fell to 1-7. North Sanpete led 8-0 after the first quarter, scored 21 in the second and added seven in the third.

Manti answered with 15 points in the second and six in the third; neither team scored in the fourth.

North Sanpete led 29-15 at halftime and 36-21 after three quarters.

Milo Hendry caught two touchdown passes for the Hawks, including a 9-yard reception with 14 seconds left in the first half. Chaetton Osborne scored on a 6-yard reception and a 1-yard run. The North Sanpete quarterback’s first name is omitted because the sources disagree.

For North Sanpete, the victory followed a 42-14 win over Carbon on Sept. 25 and gave the Hawks three wins in their last four games. They beat Canyon View 21-13 on Sept. 11 before losing 48-24 at Cedar City the next week.

The Hawks opened with wins over Cottonwood 57-0, Deseret Peak 22-21 and Delta 21-14. Their other loss came at Richfield, 36-7, on Sept. 4. The Manti game was North Sanpete’s fourth road appearance and brought its away record to 2-2.

Manti’s loss was its sixth straight since a 54-7 victory at Juan Diego on Aug. 21. The Templars lost 47-46 to Grantsville the following week, then fell to Juab, Cedar City, Richfield and San Juan before the North Sanpete game.

The Templars scored 38 points in a 61-38 loss at San Juan on Sept. 25 before returning home for the rivalry game. Manti remains winless at home, with losses to Pine View, Grantsville, Cedar City and North Sanpete.

Both teams are scheduled to play Friday, Oct. 9. North Sanpete was set to visit Beaver, while Manti was scheduled to host Carbon at 7 p.m. Manti’s official schedule lists a varsity trip to Canyon View on Thursday, Oct. 15; Deseret News lists Oct. 16, so confirm the date with the school before publication.
