MANTI—The Sanpete County Commission on April 21 honored Sheriff’s Deputy Edward Moroney with a lifesaving award after officials said he helped save a 12-day-old infant during a November emergency call in Moroni.
During the meeting, commissioners and sheriff’s office officials recognized Moroney for his response to a Nov. 22, 2025, report of an infant who was not breathing. Officials said Moroney was already patrolling in the Moroni area and arrived in less than three minutes.
Officials said the infant’s mother met Moroney at the door and handed him the child. Moroney then took the infant to his patrol vehicle and used an anti-choking device to remove a small obstruction from the baby’s airway.
The infant was taken by ambulance to a hospital and later flown to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. Officials said the child underwent testing and observation and was released the next day.
County officials said Moroney’s actions went beyond the normal duties of a law enforcement officer. They also said the anti-choking device was not standard-issued equipment, but something Moroney had researched, learned to use and purchased on his own.
Family members attended the award presentation and joined Moroney for photographs after the recognition.
